Dovetail's pricing page gives you 2 options: Free or a custom Enterprise quote. To work out what you'll actually pay, you also need to account for users, credits, and extra usage.

The pricing page is short. The budgeting takes a little more homework.

In this guide, I'll explain what each plan includes, show how the extra charges add up, and help you decide whether Dovetail fits your workflow. 👇

## Key takeaways

- **There are 2 advertised plans**: Free costs $0. Enterprise requires a custom quote, with no public starting price.
- **The free plan has clear limits**: You get 1 project, 1 channel, and 1 dashboard, plus basic AI chat and summaries.
- **The paid bill has 3 parts**: A platform subscription, users, and a shared credit allowance.
- **Overages can increase the bill**: Extra credits cost $0.15 each. With user overages enabled, additional users above your contract cost $20 per user per month, prorated.
- [**Featurebase**](https://www.featurebase.app/customer-feedback)**✨ fits feedback follow-up**: It combines feedback collection, prioritization, roadmaps, and product updates, with a Free plan and published paid seat prices.

## What is Dovetail?

*Dovetail brings customer interviews, documents, and feedback into one place.*

Dovetail is a customer intelligence platform that helps teams organize and analyze customer research and feedback. It brings interviews, recordings, documents, and ongoing feedback into a searchable research repository.

Its AI features help you transcribe recordings, summarize findings, identify themes, and ask questions across your data. You can also create clips and highlight reels to share the evidence behind an insight.

![Dovetail project board showing sales call recordings grouped by status, with calendar and video meeting app icons.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/56/ac/56acdd2c-2663-4a50-9c02-81624392e1d0/content/images/2026/10/image-193.png)

*Dovetail organizes recorded calls into projects.*

For example, when someone asks why customers struggle with onboarding, you can revisit the [qualitative feedback](https://www.featurebase.app/blog/qualitative-feedback) you've already collected. That beats trying to remember which folder contains last quarter's interviews.

## Dovetail pricing plans

![Dovetail pricing table comparing the Free plan at $0 with the custom-priced Enterprise plan.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/56/ac/56acdd2c-2663-4a50-9c02-81624392e1d0/content/images/2026/10/image-194.png)

*Dovetail offers Free and custom-priced Enterprise plans.*

As of October 29, 2026, Dovetail lists **Free and Enterprise**. New customers need a sales quote for a paid plan.

| Plan | Published price | Included scope | Main limitation |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free | $0, no credit card required | 1 project, 1 channel, 1 dashboard, basic AI chat and summaries | Limited room for separate research projects and feedback streams |
| Enterprise | Custom quote | Unlimited projects, channels, agents, and docs, plus advanced organization, security, and support | Total cost depends on the contract and usage |

Watch the word **unlimited** here. You can have unlimited projects and channels on Enterprise, but processing data and using AI can still consume credits.

### Free

Here's what the Dovetail free plan includes:

- 1 project for research recordings, documents, and other study materials
- 1 channel for tracking and classifying ongoing feedback
- 1 dashboard for viewing customer signals
- Basic AI chat and summaries

I'd start with a research question you're already working on. Upload relevant data, check whether the summaries keep the useful details, and see how easily you can get back to the original evidence.

The project limit can become a problem quickly. If you want separate projects for onboarding research and cancellation interviews, the advertised upgrade is Enterprise.

### Enterprise

**Dovetail Enterprise pricing is custom.** Your quote depends on your team, usage, and add-ons.

It includes:

- Unlimited projects, channels, agents, and docs
- Shared organizational tools, including folders, global tags, fields, and templates
- Advanced AI summaries and semantic search
- Security controls, including redaction and access management
- Priority support, dedicated customer success, and onboarding assistance

Shared tags and templates help teams organize research consistently. Permissions let you control who can access sensitive customer information.

I'd ask for the platform price, included users, and credit allowance in the same quote. You'll need all 3 to work out what happens when more teammates start using it.

### What happened to the Dovetail Professional plan?

Dovetail no longer sells self-serve paid plans to new customers. The Professional plan is part of its older pricing model, so its old per-user price won't help you budget for a new subscription.

If you're already a customer, you may still be on a legacy agreement. Check when your workspace will move to the new model and what changes at renewal.

---

## How Dovetail credits and extra charges work

Dovetail's paid subscription has 3 parts:

- **Platform**: Your base subscription fee.
- **Users**: The number of people included in your agreement.
- **Credits**: A shared allowance your workspace uses to process data and run AI actions.

To estimate Dovetail cost, look beyond headcount. Importing years of interviews and running daily AI analysis will use credits differently from mostly reviewing research that's already there.

### Data processing and AI usage

![Dovetail AI analysis showing emerging themes from customer calls with supporting video clips and source citations.](https://storage.ghost.io/c/56/ac/56acdd2c-2663-4a50-9c02-81624392e1d0/content/images/2026/10/image-195.png)

*AI themes link back to supporting customer call clips.*

Processing a data point costs **1 credit**. Depending on the source, a data point can be an imported source item, a CSV row, or a project file.

That covers transcription, translation, summaries, classification, and indexing. Redacting sensitive information adds **1 extra credit per data point**, bringing a processed and redacted item to 2 credits.

So 1 upload doesn't always mean 1 credit. A CSV with hundreds of feedback rows can use hundreds of credits.

AI usage varies by action. Dovetail gives these estimates:

| Action | Estimated credit usage |
| --- | --- |
| AI chat | 1–10 credits |
| Deep research | 5–30 credits |
| Creating a doc through chat | 1–10 credits |
| Scheduled agent run | 5–50 credits |

More complex requests can exceed these ranges. Base your budget on the actions your team expects to repeat each week.

Importing old research uses credits too, and uploading the same data again can trigger another charge. Adding an already imported source item to a channel doesn't add another processing charge.

**Check Slack and Teams billing:** The pricing page advertises free chat queries, but the credits documentation says those AI responses use credits. That includes questions from people without Dovetail accounts, so get the allowance confirmed before rolling it out across your company.

### Credit overages and additional users

Credit overages are **enabled by default**. Once your included allowance runs out, extra credits cost **$0.15 each**, billed monthly.

If you turn overages off, new data-processing and AI actions stop when the balance runs out. Work already queued can finish, but your team will need more credits to start anything new.

Extra users are billed separately. With user overages enabled, each person above your contracted count costs **$20 per month**, adjusted for the time they're active.

The $20 rate applies to **additional users above your contract**. You still need a quote for the base subscription and included users.

Everyone draws from the same credit pool, with no separate budgets per user or team. Have someone keep an eye on the balance, especially before a big import.

### Contract commitments and optional add-ons

Dovetail's credits documentation describes annual contracts paid upfront. Your included credits generally last for that contract term, then expire without rolling over.

You can't reduce your contracted users or credits below the agreed amount until renewal. Canceling or downgrading also won't get you a refund on prepaid credits.

Dovetail also lists a **paid HIPAA add-on** without a public price. If you need it, ask for it in your quote.

Prices are in USD, before applicable taxes. Check what's due upfront and what could arrive as a separate monthly bill.

---

## What Dovetail could cost in practice

You'll need a quote for the full subscription. Here's how the published extra charges can add up.

### Additional data-processing usage

Let's say you've used all your included credits and process another 1,000 data points. Each uses 1 credit, with no redaction or extra AI actions.

> **Additional usage cost:** 1,000 credits × $0.15 = **$150**.

That's **$150 on top of your subscription**. Redaction, chat, or agent runs would add more.

If you're moving an existing research library, count those source items before choosing your allowance. Your first big import may use far more credits than a normal month.

### Adding users beyond your contract

Now say 3 teammates join above your contracted user count, with user overages enabled. All 3 stay active for a full month.

> **Additional user cost:** 3 users × $20 = **$60 for that month**.

If they're active for less time, the charge is adjusted. Your base subscription and any extra credits are still separate.

I'd budget for both the people joining and the extra processing and AI work they'll do.

## Is Dovetail worth the cost?

I'd consider Dovetail if your team regularly analyzes interviews and needs to reuse past research. The question is how much time it saves and whether the findings help you make better decisions.

In [Lyssna's 2025 research synthesis survey](https://www.lyssna.com/reports/research-synthesis/), 60.3% of 300 practitioners named time-consuming manual work as their biggest synthesis frustration. The survey shows why faster analysis matters, though it doesn't measure Dovetail's performance.

I'd judge the subscription on 3 things:

- **Faster analysis**: Time how long it takes to turn interviews and feedback into useful findings, including checking the AI's work.
- **Reusable evidence**: Can a colleague find and understand past research without asking you to explain it?
- **Better decisions**: Look for findings that change what your team builds, investigates, or improves.

Try it with your own recordings and customer feedback. Include the messy stuff too, like vague answers and company jargon. That's where you'll see how much checking and cleanup you still need to do.

If you mainly need to organize feature requests, prioritize demand, and close the [customer feedback loop](https://www.featurebase.app/blog/customer-feedback-loop), compare tools built around that workflow.

### FAQs

#### How much does Dovetail cost per month?

Dovetail doesn't publish a monthly Enterprise subscription price. Its credits documentation describes annual contracts paid upfront, with extra usage billed monthly. You can divide an annual quote by 12 to compare costs, but that doesn't mean you can pay monthly.

#### Does Dovetail have a free plan?

Yes, Dovetail currently lists a Free plan with no credit card required. It's a plan rather than a time-limited trial, but you're limited to 1 project, 1 channel, and 1 dashboard.

#### Does Dovetail charge for viewers?

Dovetail's public pages disagree on this. Its purchase-plan article says Enterprise and certain legacy plans have free read-only viewers, while its credits article describes a single user type that includes admins. Ask which model applies to your contract before assuming viewers are free.

#### What happens to my data if I cancel Dovetail?

Dovetail's pricing FAQ says you keep full access until your paid billing period ends, without a refund for the remaining time. You then get 30 days of read-only access to export your data before it's deleted according to the applicable retention policy.

#### Does Dovetail offer discounts for students or nonprofits?

Dovetail's purchase-plan documentation says it doesn't currently offer special plans or discounts for students, academic institutions, or nonprofits. You can use the advertised Free plan or ask for a standard Enterprise quote.
