Canny is fairly new in the product management tools arena. Launched in 2017, it focuses on customer feedback collection and feature prioritization.

Their primary target audience is SaaS startups, and some of the more notable customers include Loom, Pitch, and CircleCI.

Aha! is used by enterprise companies, and some of the big names using this tool include LinkedIn, Dell, and Mitsubishi.

On the face of it, both are product feedback tools, but they have completely different scope and target audiences.

Right off the bat, Aha! is the more comprehensive product management tool and offers every functionality a product manager might need to do their job effectively. Despite the higher pricing (more on that in a second), Canny seems to only beat them in feedback collection.

Here are some of the key features of Aha:

  • Public and private roadmaps
  • A centralized feedback portal for feature ideas, bug reports, complaints and just about any feedback item that comes in from various sources
  • Whiteboards for idea visualization, collaboration in the cloud, wireframing and more
  • Product knowledge database for documenting features, tools and more to inform product users about your product's offering
  • Developer/project management tool for putting development and product teams together in a collaborative workspace
  • More integrations compared to Canny: 65+, including Jira, Azure Devops, Salesforce, Slack, Zendesk, Github, Microsoft Trams and many others

Canny vs Aha: pricing

It's hard to compare Canny and Aha! outright because the way they do pricing is completely different. However, this is what you can expect when you want to purchase either of the two tools.

Canny, Aha, and most product management tools can cost a pretty penny.

Canny is a product management software known for its relatively high pricing, as well as frequent changes in pricing plans.

There are four plans available:

  • Free
  • Starter ($79 per month)
  • Growth ($359 per month)
  • Business (reach out to get a custom quote)

The free plan is rather limited, but it gives you unlimited users, private board access, a changelog, and one integration. The lowest paid plan is $79, which gets you unlimited posts, a custom domain, a prioritization roadmapping tool, two integrations, and content translations.

In reality, you'll need the Growth plan at $359 monthly to get the actually useful features. This is where you get things such as unlimited integrations, custom board access, AI automation, admin roles, and user segmentation. This plan gives you five admins, as well as unlimited contributors and viewers.

All in all, compared to most Canny alternatives, it's still quite expensive for what it offers. Don't just take our word for it:

Aha! pricing

If you want to figure out how much this product management tool costs, better whip out a calculator and a notepad. While it seems affordable, Aha! pricing is split up into several different products, each with its own price point.

  • Aha! Ideas costs $49 per user per month. If you want to collect feedback (e.g. feature requests, bug reports, any type of ideas), you need this module. It comes with feedback portals, polls, Salesforce and Zendesk integrations and AI-based idea organization.
  • Aha! Roadmaps starts at $59 per user per month and has a free trial. You can use it to (of course) create roadmaps and integrate them with 30+ other tools, including Jira and Azure Devops. If you want unlimited free viewers for your roadmaps, you need to grab the pricier plan at $99 per user per month.
  • Aha! Whiteboards is $9 per month and if you just want to collect and prioritize user feedback, you don't really need this module. It's for brainstorming concepts and visualizing ideas.
  • Aha! Knowledge is the part of tool for creating and centralizing product documentation and it costs $39 per user per month. If you need a knowledge base for your customers, complete with templates and AI features, it's a solid investment.
  • Aha! Develop is $9 per user per month and it ties product roadmap items to the work your developers actually do on the product.

In short, you need to define your needs first and pick the feature set that works best for you and your customers.

It can get super confusing, so here's a simple example for people I think will mostly read this article:

Say you're a smaller startup with 4 product managers and want to prioritize & rank features on roadmaps. This means you'll need the Premium Roadmaps for $74/user/mo. You also want to collect feedback from your app using widgets, meaning you'll need the Aha! Advanced Ideas for an extra $25/user/month. This means a whopping $99/user/month and a total of $396/month.

So, as you can see, Aha! isn't cheaper at all compared to Canny. Actually, it's likely even more expensive for most of you. But in all honesty, both of them are overpriced for what they offer.

Canny vs Aha: downsides

How do customers rate Canny compared to Aha!? And what are some of the weakest points of these tools? We've done some research to find out.

Canny downsides

  • If you're switching to Canny from another tool, you'll have to transfer most of the customer feedback items manually. For example, if you previously had all your feedback in separate Google Sheets, you're forced to upload the entries to Canny instead of a migration tool doing the heavy lifting. (Source)
  • Other users complain that Canny is not that great at recognizing duplicate entries. While the AI tool is there, it does not recognize topics very well. As a result, you'll find yourself with lots of duplicate entries that you'll have to sift through manually. (Source)
  • Some users state that the feedback labels could be executed better. Canny does not allow users to link similar posts instead of merging them. Also, labels are easy to duplicate if you don't pay attention to small things such as capital letters. (Source)

The overall sentiment is that Canny does many things well, but some features simply feel half-baked.

Aha! downsides

While it packs a mighty punch, Aha! has a few things you should be aware of as well:

  • Some users state that the licences can get very expensive. If you have a large number of contributors (as opposed to reviewers), you can quickly run up your monthly Aha! invoice to a nice lump sum. (Source)
  • Then comes the complexity. While Aha! is powerful and highly customizable, that comes at the cost of the learning curve. For new users, it can take quite a while to fully master all the features in this product management tool. (Source)
  • While Aha! has a large number of integrations, some of the most important ones don't always work as intended. There are multiple cases of customers complaining about the bidirectional integrations with Jira and Salesforce. (Source)

Simply put, there's a lot going in Aha!, which means that some features are not built at the level they should be.
